Gorgeous scenery and friendly people make Malawi a fabulous holiday spot. Having gained independence from the British in 1964, the country is bordered by Tanzania to the north, Mozambique to the east, south and southeast, and Zambia to the west. Nature lovers will delight in the national parks and game reserves, and the massive Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, is great for diving, boating or just relaxing on the shores.
The lake is stocked with over 500 species of fish. Malawi has five game parks, which are great for game drives and animal and bird spotting, while Mount Maluje, with its stunning scenery is a fine hiking and rock climbing area. Water sports are very popular in the country and visitors can embark on excellent scuba diving, snorkelling, water skiing and windsurfing in and on the clear waters of Lake Malawi.
The country's transport system is safe and reliable, and travellers will find that the local currency, the Kwacha and Tambala, certainly can stretch quite far.

A principal city of Malawi and its commercial hub, Blantyre lies to the south of Lake Malawi, where the country is bordered by only Mozambique. Some of the most beautiful hills with a patchwork of evergreen forest surround the city that has a number of historical buildings, including the Blantyre Mission and the All Angels and St Michaels churches. Zomba, 59km away, has numerous produce and curio markets while the Lengwe National Park and Matope, with its Mfunda Falls, are within easy driving distance. Just 8km down the highway is the residential area of Limbe.

One of the most isolated and beautiful destinations in Malawi is Likoma Island, the larger of two islands in the northern region of the lake. With breathtaking views of the mountains and wilderness of Mozambique, Likoma remains almost untouched since its discovery by Scottish missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century. It became the base for the UMCA Anglican Mission to Nyasa, and the Cathedral of St. Peter was erected on the island in 1903.

The capital city of Malawi is well set out with a New and Old City.
The former has smart hotels, embassies and offices while the latter has markets, bus stations, cafes and interesting restaurants. However, it doesn’t hold much interest for travellers and is usually just used as a stop over for arriving or leaving the country. But a day in this lively city could be interesting, with a visit to the market on Malangalanga Rd, and a look into some of the old Indian spice and cloth shops. There is also a Nature Sanctuary on Kenyatta Rd, which thankfully isn’t like a zoo, and there are good sporting facilities at the Lilongwe Golf Club. You can also visit the tobacco auction floors. Tobacco is Malawi’s most important cash crop, so this gives an interesting insight into the country’s trade.
At night there are a number of good restaurants and nightclubs.

It was so unlike anything else. It was deep in the heart of Africa, filled with the animals of Africa, and yet it was covered with the grasses the flowers and colours of Europe." So Laurens van der Post described the 2607 metre high Nyika Plateau, where the rolling montane grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see, broken only by the occasional patch of evergreen forest, whilst the lower slopes are hidden by extensive miombo woodlands. The wild, open nature of the plateau attracts visitors who come to view the birds and animals, study the flowers, walk or ride across the hills and valleys, or simply sit in the sun and absorb the magnificent scenery. The dry, cool season is May - October with the main rains in January and February. The Nyika is free from malaria.
